OR

2. (Fastest) Core Exchange Option where Top Hydraulics ships parts from our inventory first ($1200 plus a $900 deposit).

  • Option 2 means that you get a set of rebuilt & upgraded cylinders from Top Hydraulics' inventory first, then you ship back your original set for credit of your $900 core refund. You get a full set that has been rebuilt to outlast and outperform OEM replacements.

 Full Set of Top Cylinders

A209/W209 CLK-Class | Years: 2004-2009

Shipping cost from Top Hydraulics to you: $20 within the US via FedEx 2-Day service, $50 within the US via FedEx Priority Overnight, or $90 via FedEx International Priority to most international locations.

Failure of the original convertible top cylinders is inevitable unless the car gets wrecked prematurely. This is because the original seals in all top cylinders are made of a material that decays with time and the decay is accelerated by heat and by moisture. Most CLK cylinders will fail first on the bottom, where you would not expect it. The fluid will typically first come out through the hole where the bottom mounting pin goes through the cylinder housing and the failure is caused by a decayed internal seal.

Top Hydraulics replaces and upgrades all seals with superior material, making the top cylinders in your convertible better than brand new ones. Anything short of replacing all seals in your CLK cylinders would be unprofessional and shortsighted. Top Hydraulics even adds a wiper seal that wipes off moisture of dust from the shaft as it retracts into the cylinder housing. We upgrade the cheap, tiny rod seals with much larger cup seals for maximum service life and for much better tolerance of imperfections on the cylinder shafts and we replace the polyurethane gland seals and plug seals with custom molded Viton seals, which have a nearly indefinite shelf life.

Most CLK cylinders have seven internal seals. You may have noticed how the CLK cylinders are crimped together at the factory, making it appear impossible to take the cylinders apart. Indeed, seal replacement is not a do-it-yourself job because it takes intricate machinery to open the parts up, CNC machined inserts to house the replacement seals, lots of know-how and just the right tools to close the parts up again. You will be impressed with our product once you see it!

Note: Most of these cylinders fail almost at about the same time, so it is wise to deal with all cylinders at the same time. Top Hydraulics does not prorate this package deal or charge less than the package price if you decide to have us rebuild only five or six cylinders.

Note: Some case cover lift cylinders from model year 2003 (also early 2004 models in the US) only cannot be rebuilt - they can only be rebuilt if they look as pictured on our website (p/n 2098001272 with aluminum or black plastic release knob on the bottom). If you choose optional core exchange, you verify that you are return shipping case cover lift cylinders p/n 2098001272 (as opposed to p/n 2098001072, which does not have a release button on the bottom). Contact us if you have an '03 or early '04 model CLK with the last six digits less than 009490, as this car likely still has the obsolete case cover lift cylinders 2098001072, which are worthless as cores.

The polished shafts on all these cylinders must be undamaged, or there will be an additional charge for shaft replacement (or reduction of core refund in case of core exchange order). Damage on the shaft normally occurs only through corrosion or when the shafts get hit by sharp objects - make sure to retract the shafts on the cylinders before they can be hit by tools. We currently see rust/corrosion only on the main lift cylinder shafts if these parts have been exposed to moisture for a prolonged period. The tell-tale sign for corrosion on the cylinder's shaft is a white ring of deposit at the end of the black cylinder's shaft where the rectangular rod end is attached, see image below:
corroded shaft on CLK main lift cylinder

Top Hydraulics manufactures replacement shafts out of induction hardened, polished, hard chromed, stainless steel in strict adherence to Mercedes' dimensional tolerances. We have to charge $100 per shaft replacement if necessary. So far, we have never seen more than two bad shafts per set of seven cylinders. On well taken care of cars, there should be no corrosion on the cylinder shafts.

Top Hydraulics will not rebuild W209 cylinders with severely damaged housings.

For Rebuilding Your Cylinders: Send your parts to Top Hydraulics first and we will rebuild and upgrade them to better-than-new condition.

Seals used by Top Hydraulics, Inc. include Viton™ and Teflon™-hybrid seals, as well as enhanced Polyurethane material, which far exceed the OEM's requirements for rigidity, but provide at least double the service life for your convertible car top actuators, based on scientific test data.
