Mercedes Convertible Hydraulic Cylinders + Hydraulic Pump

R170 SLK-Class | Years: 1998-2003/2004

There are five hydraulic cylinders actuating the SLK convertible top and trunk lid. Top Hydraulics' rebuild makes these parts better than new inside, on account of the far superior seal material and seal geometry used. Of course, we are using cup seals where the shaft slides through when the cylinder shaft extends or retracts.

It is also important to replace all port seals, which is where the hoses go in. Please see our illustrations below (on the bottom of this listing) on how Top Hydraulics performs this intricate upgrade!

When considering the labor involved in removing one cylinder compared to a full set of cylinders, it is usually best to have all cylinders upgraded at the same time. The reason is, the majority of the labor involved is in removing access panels, and once the panels are removed, it is comparatively not much more work to remove all cylinders at once. Remember, the rebuild service for all cylinders at once costs about as much as one single replacement cylinder from Mercedes, and you get a much better product from Top Hydraulics...

At this point, the original pumps are old enough that they are at very high risk of failure and it tends to be most economical to include the pump once working on the full set of cylinders.

Top Hydraulics offers two options for upgrading cylinders for Mercedes convertible tops.

To order with Core Exchange:  Core deposit will be refunded in full if we receive your matching cores within 60 days, the cylinder rods are unscratched, and the hydraulic lines are intact. Core exchange (where Top Hydraulics ships rebuilt parts from its inventory first) is $250 more in the end, even after refund of the core deposit.

Seals used by Top Hydraulics, Inc. include Viton™ and Teflon™-hybrid seals, as well as enhanced Polyurethane material, which far exceed the OEM's requirements for rigidity, but provide at least double the service life for your convertible car top actuators, based on scientific test data.

Hydraulic lines must be intact and attached to the cylinder(s).

Mercedes part numbers for the five cylinders in the set:

About the port seals:

At the age of the original parts, it is essential that the port seals (where the hoses go into the cylinder housing) get replaced. Of course, we are replacing them with a far superior version. Replacing the port seals requires some fancy machining and extra parts:

-On the front lock cylinder, we machine out the crimps in the aluminum cylinder housing, create a clear mounting surface and tap holes for clips, then we re-fasten the hydraulic lines with laser-cut, stainless steel clips.

-On the main lift cylinders, we machine out the crimps in the aluminum cylinder housing, create a clear mounting surface and tap holes for clips, then we finally re-fasten the hydraulic lines with laser-cut, stainless steel clips.

-On the trunk lid cylinders, we machine out the crimps in the steel tubes that the hoses go into, cut a thread around the steel ports, then re-fasten the hoses with CNC-machined sleeves.

In the end, you get parts from us that are far better than new ones inside at a fraction of Mercedes' list price.
